Reading DFI - Day 1 reading is core to learning

Reading DFI - Day 1 reading is core to learning

What did I learn that increased my understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme?

This just reinforced that all students need access to reading and how much success/life can improve for students if they have a love and enjoyment for reading.

What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading?

I really liked looking at the pillars of learning because it helped me decide the things that I am already doing and the things that I need to work on. It is nice to have the information all in one place to look at and decide on a goal that will help me know what I need to teach more of.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Using more videos and having response sheets that they used to show what they have learnt or taken away from a video they have watched. It also reminded me to make sure that it is really obvious to the students what strategies we are learning and to give time to practise these before we move on.

Reading when we aren't just teaching reading - will be good to talk to kids about how we read in so many different areas of our lives and it isn't just when we are reading with our teacher.

What did I learn that could be shared within my wider community, with either colleagues, or whānau/aiga?

I want to share the video Kids tells us why they read with other staff to show their classes as well. I think this is a nice way to remind everyone that reading is so important not just when we are teaching reading.

  1. Hi Lauren, I absolutely agree with you on your point about the pillars of learning, seeing it all in one place is incredibly useful!
Your reflection on how reading is important not just within teaching reading is very important. I think sharing the video with other teachers is a very good idea, it also makes other teachers have an impact of reading strategies even if their main role is not teaching reading (helping that link between curriculums)
Thank you for your reflection - Saph :)

  2. Hi Lauren really liked the way you wrote up your learning for the day, made it really accessible. I found the video really inspiring too. I think I will show it a couple of times to the class as it is a really good prompt for some extended discussion on the benfits of reading. Let me know how you incorporate some time for reading that is not with the teacher into your day.

  3. Kia Ora Lauren, Great to see you have pulled out some content that really resonated with you and you have a plan around what you'd like to be doing in the classroom. I look forward to hearing how the next few weeks have gone for you when we meet again.
